Attic insulation, blown to depth and kept off the vents

The cheapest comfort upgrade in a Florida house, done without choking off the ventilation your roof depends on.

What we do

A Florida attic gets brutally hot, and the ceiling below it is the biggest surface your air conditioning fights all day. Adding insulation is usually the least expensive thing you can do to that house. The part that gets done badly is the ventilation: insulation blown carelessly into the eaves blocks the soffit vents, the attic stops breathing, and the roof above it pays for it.

  • Blown fiberglass or cellulose added over existing insulation, or after removal.
  • Depth measured and documented so you know what you actually got.
  • Baffles at the eaves to keep the soffit vents open.
  • Attic hatch and pull-down stair insulation, which is usually the biggest single gap.
  • Removal and disposal of contaminated or water-damaged insulation.
  • Ventilation checked while we are up there.
  • Coordinated with a re-roof when ridge vents are being added.

Why we look at the roof at the same time

Insulation and roof ventilation are one system. Adding a thick layer of insulation without checking the intake and exhaust vents traps heat and moisture against the underside of the roof deck, which is exactly what shortens a roof's life.

Because Flat Rate Roofing is a roofing contractor first — Florida license CCC 1334537 — we look at both while we are in the attic, and tell you if the ventilation needs work.

You can verify our license at Florida DBPR.

Insulation questions, answered

How much insulation should a Florida attic have?
Current guidance for Florida's climate is a good deal deeper than what is in most older Florida attics — many were built with a fraction of it. We measure what is there and tell you the depth it would take to bring it up.
Do I need to remove the old insulation first?
Usually not. New insulation can normally be blown over what is already there. Removal is for insulation that is wet, mold-damaged, rodent-contaminated, or full of construction debris.
Will it really lower my power bill?
In an under-insulated Florida house it usually makes a noticeable difference to comfort and to how hard the air conditioning runs. We will not put a dollar figure on it — too much depends on your house, your equipment and how you use it.
